In my Foundations English Class 101, we are assigned to go through readings and identify the purpose, topic, issue, and conclusion. The first article that was assigned was "Out of Your Experience Here," by Gordon B. Hinckley. President Hinckley was informing students at BYU was a wonderful school it is and that it is a tremendous blessing to go school and get an education. His purpose was to inform the students and let them know of the challenges of coming to school. With so many people to educate it is hard to make sure that all faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints has an equal opportunity. President Hinckley, quoting himself, stated in his address, "The basic question we face now and will continue to face is simply this, 'Who will the Church educate, and who will it turn away." There is no simple answer to that question. But we know this; with so many people wasting their time, not academically challenging themselves, utilizing opportunities to educate themselves, are wasting their time. If you are privileged to come to this school make sure that you "intellectual discipline yourself," "learn how to be socially at ease with others," and "gain an unassailable spiritual strength." Don't be a couch potato.
Why is President Hinckley writing?
He wants to inform students at BYU how fortunate they are to come to this School.
What is the topic?
What he wants us to take from coming to School
What is the Issue?
It isn't easy to get an education and so many people don't take advantage of trying to get one.
What is the Conclusion?
Make sure that you take advantage of the resources that are given you. Become social interactive, spiritual strong and intellectually discipline yourself.
